One health, indigenous knowledge, climate change, surveillance

Dr. Seid Mohammed Ali is a senior academic leader and researcher with extensive experience in pastoralism, natural resource management, One Health, and higher education leadership in the Horn of Africa. He currently serves as the President of Jigjiga University, where he provides strategic leadership to strengthen academic quality, research, community engagement, and institutional governance. Dr. Seid holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Basel, Switzerland, with research focusing on integrating indigenous and scientific knowledge for rangeland assessment in Ethiopia’s Somali Region. He also earned an MSc in Tropical Ecology and Natural Resource Management from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and a BSc in Animal, Rangeland, and Wildlife Sciences from Mekelle University. Previously, Dr. Seid served as Academic and Research Vice President of Jigjiga University, where he led major institutional reforms, expanded graduate and distance education programs, and supported the establishment of the university teaching hospital. He is also the Project Coordinator of the Jigjiga One Health Initiative, a long-term program funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, aimed at improving health and livelihoods among pastoral communities in Ethiopia and Somalia. Dr. Seid has published widely on pastoralism, One Health, climate change, and health surveillance in dryland systems. He is actively engaged in national and international research collaborations and policy dialogue.
