Martin Donnelly
LSTM

Dr. Martin Donnelly is professor of Evolutionary Genetics at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK, and Honorary Faculty Member at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Prof. Donnelly co-leads the An. gambiae 1000 genomes project (www.malariagen.net/project/ag1000g/), a programme which has now sequenced, and made publicly available, whole-genome sequencing data from over 20,000 individual Anopheles mosquitoes. He has over 25 years’ experience in the molecular genetics of Anopheles, including the discovery of key insecticide resistance loci, and leading the genomic and entomological endpoints of cluster-randomised trials of next generation bednets in Uganda and attractive toxic sugar baits in Kenya. He oversees a group of 8 post-docs and 8 PhD students, and has supervised 20 PhD students to completion, including African researchers who now hold senior research positions in their home countries(n=10). Post-docs from his group have a strong track record of success in academia (11 now with PI positions) and industry (3). His research is currently supported from a range of sources including grants from NIH (5R01-AI116811-04), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (INV-062921, INV-074868) and the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR134717) on the genomics of insecticide resistance and molecular surveillance of insecticide resistance, as well as a grant the Wellcome Trust 220870/Z/20/Z ) for a four year research programme on An. stephensi in Africa.
