Solomon Yared

Jigjiga University

Medical entomology, parasitology, malaria vector control

Dr. Solomon Yared is an Associate Professor of Medical Entomology in the Department of Biology at Jigjiga University, Ethiopia. He is a leading Ethiopian scientist in vector biology, with more than 42 peer-reviewed publications in reputable international journals. His research focuses on the ecology, bionomics, taxonomy, insecticide resistance, and control of medically important vectors, including mosquitoes and sandflies that transmit malaria, dengue, and leishmaniasis. Dr. Yared is internationally recognized for being the first researcher to detect Anopheles stephensi in Ethiopia in collaboration with Dr. Carter from Baylor University. This invasive malaria vector is of major public health importance, particularly in urban settings. Since this discovery, he has led and collaborated on extensive research addressing the urban ecology, surveillance, and control strategies of An. stephensi across Ethiopia. He has contributed to and secured multiple national and international research grants funded by USAID/PMI, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with partners such as Emory University and Baylor University. Dr. Yared is strongly committed to capacity building and mentorship, having supervised postgraduate and undergraduate students and established the Yared Entomology Research Laboratory at Jigjiga University to support research, training, and surveillance activities. His work integrates research, training, and public health impact, particularly in limited-resource pastoralist regions, and aligns closely with the goals of NIH training programs.
